Losing weight and working out. Question about Whey proteins?

I've started a new "lifestyle." I've decided that i'm tired of being fat, and completely going on a diet with a workout schedule. So far i've lost 6 pounds in a week and a half. I've seen a lot of people at the gym using this whey protein stuff.. my question is.. is it worth it? Is it beneficial for weight loss, or is it more so for just muscle gaining? If it makes you lose weight, is it very effective or only a small amount of difference?
