What helps you sleep best?

I have insomnia, and it is affecting my attempts at a healthy lifestyle. I would love to wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning, eat a good breakfast, and go for a bike ride. However, I can't, because my body won't let me go to sleep at a decent hour. It is midnight now. After 3 hours of tossing and turning, I just decided to get up and pull another all-nighter. I plan to be up in 5 hours, so why bother going to sleep now?

What method helps you fall asleep the fastest? I have tried tea, sleeping pills, "day dreaming" (night dreaming?), and exercise. None of these seem to help. I don't take naps, so I'm confused as to why it takes so much effort to fall asleep.
