Unless you have logged your calories for a while or simply know how many calories are in different foods- only then can you judge by sight how many calories are in your food.
Yes, calories are energy, but there are different types of energy. There are carbohydrates, proteins, and fats- all of which your body uses for energy. Just enough and you will be restored, and too much will leave you feeling sluggish- especially carb heavy meals.
When you are really hungry and actually lose concentration and get irritable your blood sugar drops. Then once you eat again, your blood sugar picks back up and you have energy again. However, this is not a judge of how many calories were in your meal.
Keep in mind too, that a food can be really high in calorie but not weigh much, as well as a food can be heavy but not contain many calories(think fruits, veggies).
