YES, looks matter. Looks attract initially, so if they aren't attracted they won't fly towards you and I'm sure it's the same for you. No one sees personality.
If you're overweight or fat, lose weight, stop waiting for society to accept being unhealthy as unattractive. If "being above average" is code for chubby, lose weight. Personality can't replace looks
To some guys looks do matter no matter how much they say they don't. Some guys are egotistic and are so full of them self/body that they can't look past looks.
To other men Yes in the long run that prince charming will come and be like " damn that girl has such a good personality/body " so don't sweat it right now !
I hate to be so repetitive with my answers but, it all depends on the guy. Some want a girl really skinny and are more focused on the body than face. Some like personality above else, and some are really into faces. If it were me, I wouldn't care about your size because I like personality and faces.
If you are "average" in the body department but have a pretty face, then you'll get the attention of guys.

A rockin' body gets the blood runnin' I will admit, but a good personality and a pretty face is more important if you ask me, most guy's are actually surprisingly interested in a girls personality, although we are usually stereotyped into being shallow, dull creatures. Don't sweat it.
pretty face is great. I actually prefer girls with a little extra. Curves are sexy. Can you give us your height/weight? You can't say above average. There is an obesity epidemic in the USA. Average could be kinda big these days.
There's guys who'll like you just the way you are. Find those guys.
