...what do you think are the biggest misunderstandings abt health/weight loss?
State your opinions, please. :)
The fewer calories you eat, the more weight you lose. Seriously, this is not correct. A body isn't a mathematical equation. Tracking your calories and eating within a certain range absolutely contributes to weight loss, but unless you've got a body that has no hormone imbalances, an idea metabolism, and low stress, this isn't going to make the fat just melt off. What you eat matters just as much as how many calories, if not more. Balancing a diet - and actually balancing, not pulling one of those fad 'no carbs' or 'all protein' diets - is what helps get the body to function properly and break down food in the way it should.
Then, of course, there's exercise. Just like food, you need to balance your exercise. Cardio is absolutely good for you, but weight and resistance training is what builds up muscle and that's what helps burn fat. There's no risk of females bulking up. Hell, there's plenty of guys who have to really work to bulk up.
And then there's the idea that is someone is doing these things and they aren't working, they're obviously doing it wrong. Not true. If someone is working out and eating right, but not losing weight (and it's important to note this is over a several month period. At the beginning, if you're doing it right, you WON'T notice a change in the scale because muscle is building at a similar rate that you're losing fat. Measurements are MUCH clearer when it comes to recording progress), then go see a doctor. Depression, metabolic disorders, hormone imbalances, etc can all make weight loss near impossible for some people until they're treated.
Weight loss is often not simply a matter of 'put down the cheese burger and hit the gym!' and I think that really discourages many people trying to lose weight when they're doing everything right and getting no results.
Oh, and if you're not eating enough, your body will stop losing weight because it registers as a starvation diet - which is NOT a reliable way to lose weight, because your body will regain that weight immediately to prepared to future 'lean times'. For a sedentary woman trying to lose weight, 1200 is the LOWEST she should try and eat, if she's working out low-moderate and trying to lose weight 1800 is a good target, and if she's very active, 2300-2500. You need to make sure there's enough nutrients coming in to build muscles - those are what burn fat, particularly the sort of fat over-weight or obese people are trying to lose. If you're hungry all the time? You're not eating enough.
That its either working out or eating healthy, you really need a combination of both.
Low carb diets are completely ridiculous imo. and that Dairy is essential/good for you when really its the complete opposite.. plus the dairy industry funds all the research done.
Can't think of anything else at the moment (:

The number on the scale is more important than the numbers on your body.
It's not.
