If you are socially awkward past a certain age, do you suppose it could be there for good?

Some people have the gift of gab, a lot don't. But what about people that don't say anything during lulls in conversation or can't smooth over a heated moment between friends? Is this something that can't be fixed past the age of say, 18?

I'm in my early 20s but still usually find that socializing makes me anxious and I always feel that getting my thoughts out is like pulling teeth. Especially if I'm talking to someone I don't know well. Should I just accept this as part of who I am?
