Does anyone have any advice on how to lose a few dress sizes?

I understand that men and women are different, but I was thinking that cardio would be a good start and of course a healthier diet. I want to lose the weight right, meaning over the course of a couple of months. My goal is to go from a size 11/12 to a size 4/5losing fat/weight while gaining only lean muscle. I do not wish to bulk up, hence the 'lean' part. I am an athlete, I play lacrosse, so it is important to me that I lose the weight/gain some strength before my season starts in February. So, any ideas?
