What would you think if you saw a girl with a big scratch beneath her eye?

Or a black eye? Would you automatically assume she had been hit by someone? A boyfriend?

What about if the bruises were visible on her body instead (ie arms)?

If a guy had a black or scratched eye, what would you assume had happened to him?

I don't know that I would automatically presume domestic violence in either cases, though I am naturally more likely to think the girl was the victim of domestic violence than the guy. Having said that on a logical level I am quite aware that women are indeed quite capable of it. In the case of the girl, if she was a school girl or early 20's I'd probably be more inclined to think that some b*tch did it to her, because I know that women are quite capable of doing significant harm to each other, even over simple issues like jealousy. I would naturally be more inclined to believe that a guy had been involved is some drunken brawl if he looked younger or of a lower social-economic grouping and if he looked wealthy, I would assume he was bashed in a mugging. If the male or female looked eldery then perhaps a home invasion, etc. Middle aged of both genders of a lower social economic grouping, domestic violence or as a result of them getting into a fight. If they were wealthier, perhaps accidents of various forms, maybe mugging, I'd less likely to believe but still open to the possibility it was the result domestic violence or fighting. Not saying that this is right, but it would be my first guess.

I would assume that something hit her in the face. I'd ask her, what happened?

If denial, it's nothing, blah blah comes pouring in, I'd suspect abuse.

If embarrassed, legit story came out, I'd believe that story.

If I have a scratch or blacked out eye... you better believe it was something random or once in a lifetime incident. I have a good record of that happening to me... (not really the eye, but everywhere)

I've learned that jumping to conclusions is not the best way to go. Often gets you into trouble or on the wrong foot. If I was curious, I'd ask her about it, not a terrible conversation starter. Maybe she is an athlete, and had recently gone through a tough game. Maybe she just got out of a car accident. Maybe she had been hit by someone. Who knows. No one, until you ask her.
