Is it a bad idea to Oven Roast a chicken that you have poured olive oil on?

There shouldn't be a problem really, since oil is what makes roasting 'roasting', versus just 'baking' when there's no oil. The steam shot to the face when you open the oven is pretty normal, lol, you just have to remember to open the door and THEN put your face down there once most of the steam dissipates. The only thing I could guess to be the problem is that maybe you're cooking it at too high of a temperature. What do you set your oven to? Olive oil IS good for roasting, but it's not the best oil to use on high heat, or it will smoke. So all I can suggest is that you roast the chicken using olive oil at a lower temperature, but for a longer amount of time. OR cover the pan and chicken tightly with tin foil for like 1/2 to 2/3 of the cooking time, then remove it for the remainder. OR stick with high heat, but switch to an oil better suited for it, like canola. =]
i tried but the steam went everywhere. our eyes were in pain for at least half an hour
Hmm, I'm thinking it was too hot for that much oil then. Like you wouldn't deep fry something in olive oil because it would smoke before it got hot enough, you'd use one that tolerates high temps better, like peanut oil. I think it would be the same idea in the oven, especially with the amount you say you used on each thigh. Just using your hands and rubbing them down in a thin coating of oil should be more than enough for roasting. =]
No I don't think there's any major hazards. If you're worried about the steam that comes out of the oven you could try using a roasting bag?
Olive oil tends to burn quickly, but ultimately it's not that harmful.
Just don't put too much on the Chicken. That's probably what you did wrong.

It's OK to roast with olive oil on. You might want to cover it with aluminum foil so the top part of the chicken doesn't burn.
it smells so bad! and the moment I opened the door everyones eyes including my own were burning in pain for at least half an hour the whole kitchen was smokey! its deffinitly nto bad for your health?
and here I thought you were worried about the chicken's health.
