There is always a chance but it depends on your grandfathers health and how he is now.
If he isn't talking much anymore or you notice a huge personality change then you need to know that that is how he is going to be from now on and he will slowly go downhill. I work with the elderly, some of whom are in my care because they had strokes and they end up not talking very much or they have some kind of dementia related to it. Often they have mini strokes after and that's how they go. For some its fast and others its really slow.
However, if he is talking and alert then he has a better chance.

There's always a chance of survival especially if they're showing signs of recovery. It does, however, sound like there's going to be damage to how well he functions (walks, talks, etc). Just put it in God's hands and know that whatever happens is for the best. Be there for your dad and show him support and that you care and love him.

There is a good chance of survival after a stroke, it all depends on how fast a person is treated, their overall health and the stroke itself. Obviously worse strokes can be tough, but not impossible to survive. I know many people who have had strokes who have survived. Survival rates are going up too as treatments improve.
My grandma had a stroke several years ago, and she is still with us. My uncle also had a stroke 10 years ago, and it was really bad and he survived as well.
A lot of times though, functionality is damaged. The person may not walk as easily or be able to talk properly. But this can be improved with therapies.
It's always hard when a loved one goes through these things. The only thing you can do is visit and spend as much time as you can with your grandpa and hope for the best.My friend had several minor strokes starting when she was really young and no doctor thought to look into it. Until she finally had a major one. Anyway, a few years ago she had a major stroke. She had to relearn how to talk, walk, tie her shoes, etc. Her memory is a little on the bad side but not as bad as she thinks. There is always a chance to survive. This is a true story and I hope it gives you hope.
