Lower back pain during ab exercises?

Crunches, plank, whatever, I could keep doing them a lot more unless I wouldn't feel like being stabbed in the lower back in the process.

What's causing that pain? Is there a correct or incorrect way how to do them? Or is it something to suck up and to deal with for those exercises?

Also although I'm naturally thin all over, there is a little layer of fat over my stomach covering them, which is another problem.

Any tips?
