How do you know you have throat cancer?

I have been drinking a lot lately (I know there isn't any excuse) but I've been suffering from depression. Has a way to cope with my feelings I turned to the bottle, often drinking heavy amounts on weekends.

After drinking vodka straight from a bottle, my throat began to hurt me for the next 3 days.

The painful sensation went away and then I drank again the following week.

Now my throat hurts all over again.

Could this be cancer? or just an irritation?

Please no rude comments only helpful ones.

I am planning on cutting out drinking completely. I know this isn't healthy for me.

Also, what should I do to soothe throat?

Yes, see a doctor. Throat cancer is fast-acting. My uncle just passed away from it in May because he waited to see a doctor.
