Anyone else get ice pick headaches?

Ok about a year and a half ago I experienced my first ice pick headache. I was outside my place hanging out with a friend when all of a sudden I could not keep my eyes open. There was a pain that shot all the way through my head from the top (like a giant screwdriver being jammed in from the top) to the base of my skull. It lasts anywhere from 15 seconds to one minute. There are days where this will happen numerous times and I go through most days of my life without even having one. Yesterday and today I have been having them over and over. They are crippling and you cannot speak or talk or move. After the headache leaves I have a hollow space where it feels like the ice pick (or screwdriver) was and it is a faded version of what is left from the headache. Does anyone else get these?

They are not going away but maybe getting less frequent-taking melatonin-thxn for the answers and concern

another fit of them and they are really bad right now-I know go to the doctor. I need insurance to cover the tests to see what is wrong. The research I have looked at does not even help the people that have symptoms as bad as me when treated with all sorts of things

Sorry to hear about the update. :( I hope you get to the doc soon and feel better. I found an essential oil blend by Wyndmere called Head Aide that helps with me with minor headaches (dilute 20 drops per oz water/lotion and apply). Hope that helps bring some relief/prevention to hold you off while you seek a doctor.

Also, stay healthy! 8-9 hours sleep/night, no trigger foods (red wine and tea have tannins), destress, drink water, and keep your cardiovascular system in tip top shape.

when I get insurance I will. I just got to ride it out for a bit. I wish I knew someone else who had them so I could get any tips to make it a bit better.

Have you looked into going to an urgent care? They can help you out and at least prescribe you indomethacin. They're not too expensive if you don't have insurance. Other than that, get a lot of rest and try to cut down on your stress levels.

I wish I could cut down on my stress levels. What is indomethacin? I also was told by someone that melatonin would help me.

Its an anti inflammatory medication, sort of like ibuprofen, and is used commonly for ice pick headaches. Melatonin may work as well but I've always heard of indomethacin being used.

Not that I can think of. I had the same diet for the last 8 or 9 decades. The headaches started about a year and a half ago and I remember I started to smoke again around that time. I quit about 11 days ago again. So we will see what happens and you are welcome for the compliment :)

There should be some clinics or county hospital you can go to without insurance. I say this because a friend of mine suffered from a debilitating migrain all of a sudden. And she had to go through elimination of foods. A real pain. And good for you for quitting. :)

I have had a couple financial problems lately and I am very stubborn and hate being a leach but I will look into it-and thnx it is not easy to quit.

Search WebMD for types of headaches. You may have cluster headaches or sinus headaches. It's hard to diagnose as 1) I don't have enough info and 2) I'm not a doctor, unfortunately. But as a migraine/sinus headache sufferer I can sympathize and urge you to see a doctor of some sort, perhaps even an ENT doctor or neurologist.
