I'm currently living in Japan and some of my favorite foods here are
Sushi! I like the ones with raw Tuna the best, eel is a close second
Yakiniku- You order whatever type of meat you want, smother it in sauce (you mix the sauce so it can be sweet, spicy, whatever) and grill it in the middle of the table. Freakin amazing!
Ramen- REAL ramen is delicious! The noodles are thick and there's a variety of different soup bases you can use (miso and garlic are my favs), they generally will add in an egg, meat, beansprouts, and seaweed.
Gyudon- It's a beef and rice bowl. I'm seriously addicted to these things and they're the best drunk food ever. It's just tender shredded beef and onion that has been cooked in dashi, soysauce, and mirin then put on rice. SUPER AMAZING!

The states basically rip off the main dishes from everywhere else. We try to copy them, but it's rarely authentic unless a person from where the dish is from owns or works at the restaurant (ie, Mexican or Chinese restaurants owned and run by families). The best we've got is probably burgers and fried chicken like others have said.
new york city pizza doesn't compare to anything! I've had authetic italian pizza and although it was lovely, I still have an itch for my NYC pizza over that any day
