I Never had my tonsils taken out but last October I had my wisdom teeth taken out I was really scared because they were impacted. This is how it went. I went in to the doctor and all I remember is sitting in the chair getting a needle in my arm or hand I don't remember and the nurse saying "ready to go to sleep" and after 3 seconds I was out cold. I woke up groggy and a little confused. I was swollen but not in much pain. I remember the first night my mom brought me noodles since I couldn't really chew anything and the metal spoon slightly tapped my tooth and it was like ringing a dinner bell my mouth was radiating in pain I started crying. They gave me anti bio-tics and Vicodin but I only took like 2 or 3 because between the anti biotics and pain meds I was tired and then nauseous. For a few days I was in pain but not an unbearable pain just uncomfortable. I noticed after a week I kept getting this bad taste and smell in my mouth the hole was still open so food was falling inside and rotting I kept rinsing my mouth with salt water like they said but eventually I said screw and used Listerine I don't know if that was bad but it had to be done. I do remember them saying TO NOT DRINK WITH A STRAW the suction or something creates something called dry socket which can be more painful than after the surgery. It took two months for me to feel completely back to normal where I forgot I had the surgery. You're not going to be able to chew for several days. I didn't want to rely on pain meds so aleve might be better to take. Everyone is different but It really wasn't all that horrible

Use the prescribed pain meds. You'll need them.
Also, a bag of frozen peas makes for a great ice pack.
I think I used my pain meds for like 2 weeks...? And all I remember is my face was swollen for a week, too. Post surgery, I remember bits and pieces of the ride home, and the same for when I got home. After I got home, I don't remember anything. I thought I went to sleep, but apparently I had some conversations that I didn't recall at all. Was kinda trippy.
Had my tonsils out and thought I was gonna die. Had wisdom teeth cut out and was up and running in like 5 days fully. Only took my pain meds for like 5 I think. Tonsils it took me two weeks to recover from the pain. And I didn't eat ice cream for at least four years because that was the only thing that soothed my poor little kid throat. I do however recommend jello and mashed potatoes after the wisdom teeth. I decided to branch out by then lol.
I'm not sure about tonsils, but I've had the wisdom teeth thing done.
When you have your wisdom teeth removed, most of the time they can just be pulled. There are a few who has to have them cut out.
I had to have my wisdom teeth cutout...it was incredibly painful, but I think mostly because the pain medicine I had was a strong tylenol instead of a narcotic. Aleve would probably be about the same that I took. I promis you, if you have prescription meds, you will give into temptation and take them over Aleve.
The thing that sucks the most is all the bleeding. I bled for 4 days before I started to clot. Once you start to clot, you can start to be active again, but you're still not out of the woods so to speak...you have to be careful not to tear out your clots.
Here is a tip though...take Lipton tea bags, wrap them in gauze and stick them between your soutures and bite down easily. The enzymes mix with your saliva and speeds up the clotting process. The best time to do it is when you sleep. (Be careful of the staple in the bag though)
Good luck

I had two of mine pulled out -- one just popped out and the other took some real tugging. It wasn't that bad at all. My cheeks only swelled up a little. I think I took one or two doses of the meds and I wouldn't have been doubled over without it or anything. It varies from person to person, of course -- things like how impacted the teeth are make a big difference. I've only known a handful of people who had it too bad, though.
