Ive taken martial arts since I was 11 and I've seen people who come in great ans some out of shape it makes no diff. I have a friend who I take classes with and he's at least 50lbs over weight he's a black belt and fast as hell. Being out of shape dsnt make a diff ull suck bec your a beginer and ull be awesome when you do it for a while nothing to do with how you were prior to taking classes

I say go for it! While being fit will help with martial arts, they cater for everyone. They're usually very professional and understand your needs. They will understand you're a beginner and put you in a beginners class with others at a similar level. And not only will you be learning self defense, its also a great way to get fit! no not at all, I can guarantee you that martial arts training will get you fit though. doesn't hurt to know how to kick ass and to be able to defend yourself. for health reasons I would recommend some strength training and lots of cardio, and a healthy diet gos a long way.

Well most martial arts you start at a low level which doesn't really require that much fitness. The only recommendation is stretches cause you need to be flexible for a lot of the moves. Also coordination will help. The fitness comes from the art itself.
No, the instructor should adjust to your skill and fitness level. You'll get in shape as you progress in class. But trying to get in shape beforehand won't hurt.
