How can one improve their social circle?

I'm the blunt guy at work. Everyone will come up to me for a straight up answer if they want to actually hear the truth. But I'm not the one they'll come up to and just shoot the sh*t with, or ask to go hang out. I've tried to change that perspective at work, but too many people know me there, so outside of work, how can someone like me improve their social circle? I've been thinking of deleting my worthless Facebook account, because the people on there only added me so they could say they have X number of friends.

I live in Utah, so there aren't many clubs, or anything outside of the worthless church activities, but maybe some new ideas can help me find other places to look.

I used to live in a suburb and couldn't meet any new people.

Then I moved across the country to a big city. It was great having a higher paying job and being able to go to night clubs every weekend...but I just lost my job and this is the first Saturday night that I won't be able to go out =(

You should try to be proactive at work and arrange for group outings! I did this at my work place and managed to get 5 people to see Wreck-it Ralph with me (though the two groups of us 3 traveled separately and arrived at the theater at different times). I wanted to get some co-workers together to go bowling as well, but then I lost my job...

You could try to make a club. I did this in college for game development, but also had a lunch time get together for Japanese language practice...until I lost my job...

There's bound to be an activity that isn't so religiously-tied that is being done at the church.

I am not going back to that suburb. I'd sooner sleep on the street than fly back!

CONCLUSION: Gather people together to do something new and interesting every other week or so. If you can move to a city, DO IT. If you cannot, you have to be as resourceful as you can be!

I went through the same thing. I am as blunt as a lead pipe so people always come to me when they want an honest opinion. I learned that the best way to change your social life is to brighten up your personality a little. Still be blunt, but don't be mean. Say hi to people, smile, and be nice. But when they want you to be straight up, still be that way because people like that in other people. But be friendly when you're not asked for advice. If people see that change in you, they will start to like you more and want to hang out socially. It worked for me, and I had a hell of a reputation to come back from. It will probably work for you too.

Try to fit in

You may want to get a makeover and upgrade your appearance because people tend to flock to very good looking people.the more attractive and stylish you are the more people will want to be around you (both sexes)

Easier said than done with that. I don't look that good with any style I've tried.

Location, location, location. If the area you are in is too churchy then best thing to do might be to move.

If you are good at sports that is always a way to meet people. I know in Utah people do outdoors stuff.

Start going to places you would want to meet like minded people. Take up golfing or some other sport (team or not).
