Why would a guy give a female coworker FAKE smiles at work all the time?

Not sure if it's because he's attracted to me. Can it be a weird way of socialising? He does this ALL THE TIME we meet or talk. I really don't understand his intentions.

haha my coworker used to do this and I would do it back, it was in sort of "my life is miserable but look I'M HAPPY" sort of way... I don't know how to really explain it , but it that's just what it meant for us.
