Is it possible a guy is super awesome in your eyes but withdrawn and bashful in his own eyes?

Okay, so this could technically go either in "flirting" or "dating" on GAG since it involves both.

I met a guy who basically has all the fundamental qualities I look for in a guy (gentleman, honest, smart, etc.), but he's very quiet. At first I thought it was because he didn't like me, but as we got to know each other better we sort of warmed up to each other and let nature finally take its course. The chemistry between us is so strong, and yet there's always a strange sense of hesitation and confusion tainting it. After our first few times making out, he told me that he's very bashful. He wanted lights out; he wanted to stop and set all sorts of limits; he wanted to to all this stuff that seemed funny to me. I asked him if he was a virgin, but he said "no" and explained that he's "just very bashful". He's had girlfriends before, and possibly there's some criticism that he thinks will carry over into this relationship... I'm not certain.

Anyway, I'm always telling him how awesome he is and he's always asking "Really?" like it's unbelievable. Is it possible that such a great guy would really think of himself as insufficient when it comes to pleasing his girl? Perhaps that's why he's always so careful to be a gentleman and mindful of little things that are important to me but not so much to him...
