Isnt watching sports and watching "stupid girl shows" the same?

Sports-- same thing every year, same plays, same rules, same excitement over and over and over... Although it can be very entertaining.

Girl shows-- similar plots in different ways sometimes, love stories, blah blah .. can also be very entertaining.

I mean, WHEN IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO IT! You're not getting a lot out of it besides both being entertaining.

It depends on your reason why. Many people who watch sports watch it for the technicality involved. They admire the insane amounts of skill and physical fitness involved to complete the feat. And many classic sporting events have what I call "movie moments" which are points at which things boil down to a level of nail biting suspense that it's like watching a well done movie. Case in point, the 2008 MotoGP championship at Laguna Seca, the battle between Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner. Two men pulled so far ahead of the other racers that it boiled down to an epic battle between just the two of them, the kind you would only expect to see in the movies. They pushed each other beyond their limits and beyond the limits of their bikes. Purely amazing to watch them leave both their limits and the limits of their machines in the dust as they battled it out so far ahead of the pack it wasn't even funny.

There's the recap of it. And then you have the classic 1983 AMA Superbike battle between Eddie Lawson and Freddie Spencer. Spencer was riding the all new Honda VF750F Interceptor. It was super high tech and set to take the race world by storm. Nothing could touch it in theory. But Eddie Lawson on a Kawasaki GPz1000, which was built primarily on outdated 1970s technology, was too big and heavy, and had crap suspension, entered the race and he pushed that biked farther than it was meant to go. He went into corner faster, leaned it over farther, and barreled through turns so hard that he was scraping parts along the ground leaving a shower of sparks in his wake. He took the championship from Freddie Spencer and became a living legend.

That's the thing. Those moments in sports are what inspire people to go out and do things. Sports in a way are all about pushing your limits, and seeing other people push theirs on the small screen often makes you want to go out and push yours.

When I witness that, then I'll stop thinking It's a waste of time sitting on your butt watching other people throw a ball around, or driving a car, etc ...

By waste of time, I mean literally that if you stopped watching it, your life won't change much. I'm sure you're that enthusiastic about women's tennis, women's basketball, golf, ping pong, equestrian, horse racing, shooting, archery, cross country skiing, running, canoeing, rowing, curling, field hockey... If you're enthusiastic about all those sports and think all of them are not just entertaining but life changing, then Touche.

I tend to be enthusiastic only about sports that involve doing things I myself consider fun. Archery however is another one I can watch in awe of.

A former professor of mine once referred to ESPN as the male equivalent of E!. If there was ever any doubt in my mind that this was accurate, that doubt was dispelled recently by ESPN's coverage of the Manti Te'o's girlfriend story.

That said, there's no episode of Gossip Girl that can compare to the 1980 Miracle on Ice. Bridezilla will never have the broad social implications of Jessie Owens winning four Gold Medals in 1936 at Berlin or Jackie Robinson playing in the MLB. Sports may be frivolous entertainment, but when was the last time you saw an episode of real house wives bring an entire country together?

I've never seen a sports event that brought the country together. I think that sports fanatics just like to think that way because they are so amazed by how a game went.
