It seems like your major concern is that Proactiv will damage your skin- and that's HIGHLY unlikely. Basically it's the same over-the-counter washes and lotions that you can buy at any drugstore or grocery store. It isn't especially harsh, but it also isn't especially effective, either. I tried it for awhile (I think I got a 3-month trial or something like that,) and didn't notice any big improvement from the stuff I was using before (which I bought at Walgreens for much cheaper.)
I think that Proactiv's success is 1% happy customers and 99% good marketing. I'm not saying it's a *bad* product, but it's certainly not the miracle solution it's made out to be. If you wanna try it out for yourself- go for it... it's not gonna hurt your skin, at least.

It honestly didn't work for me, so that was a waste of $ !
but I guess it depends on the person?
I think you break out because you're stressing out about your acne or even by the acne you already have on your face, just know that not all blemishes are permanent and that they will go away sooner or later. Keep washing your face and also look into some salicylic acid acne treatment pads by Neutrogena, they worked for me! :)
You don't need to use proactive. The active ingredient, which does work very well, is benzyl peroxide. You can buy it by itself for very cheap. If you use it two or three times a day, it will clear your acne. Using a moisturizer that has AHA would help your complexion, diminish any scars, and also help some with your acne. It's best to use moisturizers 10-15 after a shower.
I used it as a teenager and it honestly did not make much of a difference. I believe looking into your diet and finding a routine that best works for the individual is key.
I used abricot scrub every 2 to 3 days and every night an acne soap. Plus stopped eating high sugar or fried foods.

Proactive doesn't work for everyone. I for one used it for a year and though it started clearing things up it sort of flat lined and turned into a battle of fighting off breakouts; not solving the acne problem.
I get stress acne so I recently started breaking out, I started using oxy clean maximum strength face wash and it's done wonders with only three washes :D plus it wasn't even $5!
Some people have a bad reaction to it.
