I'm just wondering opinions on this?

I had a physical done today and my doctor said my thyroid felt abnormally large. So she had me go do an ultrasound on my throat. They found I had a cyst on my thyroid, but said they are not doing anything yet, and that they're just going to monitor it. My throat has felt abnormally large for years (as another doctor commented on it, but never did any tests).

I told my boyfriend and he said I should tell the hospital that they need to do something about it right away. He's really upset about it. The thing is...I have been gaining weight very rapidly, and I've improved my diet considerably and I do exercise. I heard thyroid can cause rapid weight gain, but...I would think they would have done something about it if they thought that was it.

Should I just listen to the hospital or should I demand further treatment?

Funny, every serious health issue I've ever had, I had to diagnose and force doctors to do something about myself as they probably though I was an over dramatic young woman.. I always demand they run test when I suspect something is wrong.

It's not always their faults, as they are swamped with paperwork and a slaves to insurance companies but it's your health and you have a right to demand they do something. Once you let them know you are going to get a second opinion, they usually give in..

Thyroid issues can be very serious! For example, an overactive thyroid can cause a dangerously high heart rate which can lead to serious heart problems and even death over time if untreated :/

Low thyroid can also cause equally serious health concerns.. weight gain included.

You may only have a minor imbalance and seemed healthy enough during your visit, so they didn't order tests... the problem with this is, it could and usually does get worse with time

Your boyfriend is right to be mad. Go to a doctor who will run tests and take action now.

I don't want to alarm you. A friend of mine had this & 2 Dr.s' told her the same thing. It was more then just a cyst.

Please get a 2nd opinion & even a 3rd.

Thank you. Perhaps I will get a second opinion. I thought it was strange that my doctor in the place I used to live never checked it, but she certainly commented on it. This doctor checked it and said there was a cyst, but wouldn't take action unless it started growing.
