I just wrote some lengthy healthy lifestyle + weight loss tips in another answer today, if you care to dig through my responses.
Also, I think doing full body activities (cardio) will do more to reduce weight than straight up muscle training.
Why don't you also join a pick-up league or team? They are generally pretty relaxed, you can chose a sport that interests you and I think the sense of commitment to the team is pretty motivational. You can see if a friend or two will join with you. Participation, team-building, competition and fitness together - sounds appropriate for someone who is possibly looking to enlist.
Good luck!

I would like to suggest p90x, its an awesome work out plan.
Focus more on your diet. The primary influence on your current weight is your diet.
People consume enough calories daily to run 2 marathons, but you will not run enough to burn off all that you consume. So consume less calories.
Try moving to a more vegetable diet, and leaner meats like chicken. Try root vegetables, like beets, zucchini (slice them and cook them on a pan with butter and salt. It's really good). Avoid starchy vegetables like potatoes. High protein foods/low fat foods like greek yogurt are also good with some fruit + cereal in the morning.
50 pounds means in 12 months you are losing 4 pounds a month and avg one pd a week
this is a very possible and a realistic goal but my suggestion is get some lean proteins in there so you actually build up muscle along the weight loss
350 situps is a big waste of time
if you want nice abs you have to do plank, leg lifts and compound movement like squats and deadlifts
starting out with pushups is good but eventually you want to move on to using a bench because it is a good way to gain muscle

This is doable' 90 percent of it is getting on a diet, a scientfic, reasonable one that you can stick to for a whole year.
Don'ttry fads or anything extreme, and for this much weight, I wouldn't wing it as you are doing. I'd sign up with an organization such as Weight Watchers. They are PROFESSIONALS, have done research and have experience putting a plan together than won't feel like torture.cardio and water! ..i recommend doing the insanity workout, look it up and download it or something, great workout 40 minutes a day or so..a little more sometimes.. also hit them weights and eat lean proteins and veggies :)
Walk, and run..doesn't have to be hard though, cut back on soda, chips, fatty foods.. start off easy when you excersice.
