I couldn't tell you what proportion do, since you can't tell how many people aren't in the gym if they...aren't there lol.
But yeah, there are quite a bit of ladies at the 2 gym locations I go to with my gym. There's actually a nice mix of people: young, old, male, female, casuals, athletes, body builders, and so on.
To address your question, most people feel nervous or intimidated to start at the gym since it's a place that is kind of built around setting and achieving goals. But it wouldn't make sense for people to look at you as if you should already be fit before you even start at the gym. For one, that's just unrealistic and that's why you're going to the gym in the first place. Second, people don't pay that close attention to others around them in the gym anyway- it's just a fear you're building up in your head. Really, the only people who have any behavior even remotely similar to watching others are the people who aren't focused and serious about their workouts to begin with. So that's really only lazy bums or gym newbs, and there's no reason to worry about them anyway, right?
Just get in there and get a routine going. The sooner you do that, the sooner you'll realize that people are in their own little zone while they're working out. Pay attention to yourself and your workout, and all will be alright.

I used to go to planet fitness and now go to a Gold's gym. Two very different environments. From what I notice, the girls in shape at planet fitness don't actually work out and are there for attention, and the rest who aren't are majorly trying to lose weight and doing LOADS of cardio. Then a few of them are toning, but most who want to tone are very afraid of working out with males. But honestly, depending on the PF location, there's mixed crowds. One I went to had thug looking ghetto kids trying to chat up girls on cardio machines and another one I went to people all did their own thing.
The Gold's gym I go to is like... major tunnel vision on working out and very little conversation unless the people already know each other outside of the gym. They also have a women's only room that some girls go into and other girls laugh at it. So mixed opinions there. They also got group classes.
As for people looking at you, ignore them. If you don't want people talking to you, just keep headphones on, even if you're not listening to anything. It's an easy way to silently say "Leave me alone." You'll pretty much never get approached unless you have your headphones off.
I go to the gym! There's a small, free gym in my student halls-complex, so I figured why not go? I had to quit my sport (volleyball) at the beginning of the school-year, so I needed a different outlet.
I don't like the gym to be honest, but that's just because I prefer to not be seen when I do strengthening exercises as I am not as good as I want to be and I don't like any crowded place. But I usually go with a friend at a low-key hour. We do a bit of warm-up cardio for 20 min and then do strengthening exercises for about 40. People (guys) at the gym don't really look at you strangely (unless they think you're hot). Many of them don't even care too much, because they're caught up in their own work-out-routine. If they do look at you for more than a glance, it's 99% of the time a positive look. If you have/get a work-out-routine that works for you, I say just stick to it diligently and keep your head/eyes down. If you're not staring at everyone, you're not even going to notice whether they do or not.
Yup, I go to the gym a few times a week. I felt really uncomfortable at first about being weak and being ogled, but I promise you'll get used to it after a few times. Also, I find the ogling isn't too bad so long as you don't wear super short shorts or a low-cut tank-top.

I gym everyday..weights and cardio..there are all sorts of people in the gym so do think that everyone will just be looking at you...if you wanna be stronger hit the weights..
Weights are like magic and addictive.it can change your body in ways you can't imagine..when you start seeing muscles youve never seen it can be very motivating...when you go to the gym if you don't wanna be bothered just put your game face on..headphones and a cap if you like and just keep in mind I'm here to workout that's it.First if you go to goodlife I hope you never want to have a personal trainer. It's ridiculously priced! I realize that every good life is going to have different people but I've been to 3 different areas and they all have the same type. Believe me when I say that you will not be the odd man out. Just don't go for attention you wanna workout go work out. None cares why your their so going to flirt just gives the rest of us a bad name
Theres plenty of small girls and large girls and masculine girls that go to my gym...I personally don't judge in the gym. People are all different that's what makes us who we are, the fact that they go to the gym means they want to make a difference or maintain who they are and that says a lot. So stop worrying about what everyone will think and start worrying about how you will feel after you go. I simply love the gym and go to it about 4-5 times a week.
Well good luck.Yeah a lot of girls do. Don't be scared about going. People of all body types go to the gym, no one is going to care that you're tiny and don't look really strong. It's not like you're the 600 lb woman, you have nothing to worry about people looking at you crazy
Don't be intimidated go. When I started going to a gym I looked like a skinny kid and had braces on my legs. I got looks at first but after a while I guess it wore off no one even noticed me any more guys would even give advice on how to do things the proper way.
yeah there are tons and don't worry about being tiny. I am right there with you. in my experience, its the girls who don't look really muscular who go to the gym the most. at least at the gym I go to, there is an unspoken etiquette that if someone you don't is on a machine(treadmill, elliptical, ect) you leave at least one in between unless all the others are taken. and if you notice a guy looking at you work a little harder and you won't notice anymore, you'll be too focused on breathing. lol
You'll be fine!
I'm pretty tiny as well (5'1- petite). I've been going to the gym since I was like 8, so it's not really weird for me. I go to two gyms and see people of all shapes and sizes there, give it a go! (:I'm tiny and I go to the gym. I go to one at my school. I go for 3 hours a day on average. Why? Not sure. Just get lost in the workout, I guess. You don't get judged at the gym. People are all there for the same thing - to get in shape.
There's a lot of girls that go to the gym. I usually go with my friends. It seems like everyone focuses on themselves. I don't think you have to worry about anyone judging you.
I go to the gym often, and I was pretty self conscious when I first started going. Soon after, I realized no one cared! Just go and stay healthy, no one will judge you!
There are a whole lot of women using cardio machines and doing group classes to lose weight and 'tone up', and some men on the cardio machines, and a whole bunch of men lifting to get swole.
A good amount go. Now, those that actually know what they are doing are more rare, though.
I would, but they're all $40 a month where I live and I can't afford that. I think it'll be fine, though.
When I go to the gym I see girls on the treadmills if anything. Women are about being slim. Guys in the gym are on everything else to build muscle.
Yes many do
