Stupid athletes with 4th grade reading levels?

How do you feel about the recent study at the University of North Carolina done by whistle-blower Mary Willingham?

Her results showed that between 8-10% of the school's football and basketball players are reading below a third-grade level and 60% between 4th-8th grade level.

***This was only done on 183 athletes at one school so obviously this experiment does not speak for ALL athletes***

BUT...

How do you feel about the generalization that all athletes are free-riders and don't have to work as hard in school due to the fact that they are generating revenue for it?

Also, do you think that American reading-level assessments are flawed in any way?

I think the study was flawed. She couldn't even name the specific players who she claimed that couldn't read, and if she cared so much why didn't she say something when she discovered that they couldn't read? Why didn't she tell someone? She knows she can get paid off of stories like this . Now she claims that she has recieved death threats so you know she's going to charge big money for interviews and if a book publisher wants to do a book deal with her, she's going to charge big money. Now athletes work harder than regular students. When school is out for the summer, regular students can choose to either take the summer off or attend summer classes Not athletes. College athletes are under contract so they have a obligation to fufill. A regular student can eat whatever the hell they want to but athletes have to follow strict diets.

It's pretty much the majority, I think David Beckham is an icon as a football player (or soccer) and someone who managed to be really successful with no education, I think he failed all high school. a lot of them are but some aren't

That's just the way it is. They are brought in to make money. There have been situations when athletes mostly football players have wanted to take serious classes and their couches won't let them because it would take away time they could be concentrating on football. So they take classes like "The History of TV." In a lot of cases the term "Student-Athlete" is a joke.
