The first one is a lot better. The second one looks like it is going for a chiaroscuro high contrast look, which can look awesome and really artistic, but it's got the contrast wrong. For chiaroscuro to work well, you want the darks to be really dark, and the highlight to be soft. In this case, the dark is the part you are seeing, which means it isn't dark enough, and the light is totally blown out highlights.
Something like this does the contrast better:
So yeah... use the first one. It shows off the beauty of the person in the photo a lot better.1
