I just have to laugh every time a friend gets married. What benefit does it serve them (men) to offer themselves up to the mercy of women, who undoubtedly have an edge in every conceivable way when it comes to marriage. It's signing yourself up to become a hostage.

That's why we have prenuptial agreement and women will sign them... More so today with their wealth requisition than ever.
Where I come from, most girls get married between age 20-30. Any girls above the age of 25 and NOT married or at least seeing someone seriously is deemed to be unwanted (or more precisely, the "leftover girls" they call it).
And I still don't see the need to date or marry anyone until I see someone I really love. Like you, I don't see any benefits to offer myself to be "serving" a man, so to speak. I'm an introvert and I enjoy having my own space, I hate to be intruded unless I really like the guy's company.
So I guess it applies pretty equally among both genders. And I would laugh with you when another friend gets married haha.
