What's the difference between getting a marriage annulled and getting a divorce?

A divorce is just a legal parting of the ways, permanently separating the parties who were joined together on the marriage license. An annulment basically states that the marriage itself never happened, which is an option for people in faiths where divorce isn't technically "allowed" (such as Catholicism).
A divorce is when everyone knows they were married for some time. A marriage annulled, is basically when they said "It never happened, we were never married" - as if it never took place.
