Is it rude to exchange a gift for something different?

My boyfriends parents got me jeans and a jacket for xmas. They kept saying to me if I didn't like it then I can exchange it and just to let them know. Anyways, the clothes aren't my style and I would much rather exchange them. My question is if this is totally rude to do , since I think they meant I could exchange them for a different size -not something completely different?

They'll be a little offended, regardless of what they said... but if they were very adamant about telling you that, they'll be okay with it in the end. I'd exchange it. After all... if you don't say anything, you might get more of that style of clothing in the future because they'll think they know your style because you were "happy" with what they got you this time. They are so good to me and the last thing I want to do is offend them or make them think I'm not grateful :/

They will be fine. Really. They wouldn't say it was okay if it really wasn't. Again, better to do it now, than chance having to keep doing it in the future. Plus, it would be rude not to "keep appearances" if you keep them... which means you'll be expected to wear it when around them sometime. Best to just bite the bullet and trade it in. It'll be okay... so don't worry.

I agree. It will probably feel awkward for you & his parents when you mention that you'd like to exchange it, but it would be best. They'd probably feel more offended knowing they spent money on something you will never wear! And I COMPLETELY agree with the part about how you "might get more of that style of clothing in the future..." if you don't speak up now & let them know what you prefer. They will feel more at ease and confident with future purchases for you. So respectfully tell them :)
