Is $60,000 a year good?

I just got a new job that makes $60, 000 a year after a couple years of searching and having to slave away at Tim Hortons and Walmart. A friend of mine told me that I am just wasting my time with $60,000 a year and that it's actually a really bad starting salary. She's looking for a job in the same field as me, so that's why I am wondering if she is right. I'm worried I might be getting ripped off. She was really upset when I told her.

The vast majority of the people on this site are kids that are still in college and live off mommy and daddy or student loans.

I pull in about $3,000 a month after taxes and health insurance, so I make a net amount of 36-40k/year. Now I'll grant you the fact that I am single with no dependents and that I'm kind of a cheap skate, but I have thousands in the bank and I go out of town every time I have 2 or more days off of work in a row. I buy new clothes all the time and don't even pay attention to gas prices or food prices. If you can't live off of 60k/year then the problem is you. Also, your friend is an idiot ...you have to work your way up in the real world, you don't just start at the top if you have no experience.

Nope I just got an apartment two months ago. I had to live with my parents until then because I was paying off loans. Pathetic I know since I am 26 and will be 27 in two months, but I wanted to pay them off. My friend was able to get out on her own right away. But now I have a small savings and I'll be able to build it up. I've decided to keep it since after all my googling I haven't found anything about it being a scam. I even showed her these answers but she still thinks I should quit

No I honestly thought it was good and I was excited but she keeps saying it's just a scam and to quit right now. I spent hours googling it and I haven't found anywhere that says it's a scam. So I told her, and showed her this question on here of what you guys said but she is still insistent.

Please take it. You have been looking for a while. You can't find anything bad about this co. What's the worst that can happen? It is a scam? You'll figure it out quickly I'm sure. You can always go back to Walmart, it's not like you're leaving a great job behind & one that you can't return to.

That's her opinion. What facts does she have to back it up? What's right for her (in her mind) isn't always right for you. You have done your research & are excited, go for it!

Oh I plan to. I don't start until the new year, so I'm finishing out at Walmart because of all the Christmas hours and over time I've been getting and then I'm enjoying a week of relaxation before I start. I quit Tim Hortons only because I was never happy, and I can get more OT at Walmart.

Unless your cost of living is really high AND you spend a lot of money on extra things you don't need, then $60,000 is pretty damn good. You're not getting ripped off at all, it sounds like you've got your life together. I don't know why your friend reacted that way, she's either unaware or messing with you for some reason...

"She's looking for a job in the same field as me"...depends what field your job is in...but generally, she just sounds like she is jealous (she's still looking and you've gotten a job already) and doesn't have any idea what she's talking about. Especially as a starting salary, that sounds awesome!

No I actually wasn't bragging. I was really upset after she told me that and this is the only questions and answer site I belong to. If I were bragging, would I not be going up to people who actually know me and going: "Hey I make 60k a year now!" Why would I do this on the internet and anonymously. If I were bragging I would have used my username, but I didn't want people who know me on here to know. I am a regular here.

And I found out you, and a lot of other people on here are right. She was only upset because she is jealous. I found out through a mutual friend that she is extremely mad at me for finding the job in our economy. I don't get why she would want me to quit though. I was jealous when she met her boyfriend, but I didn't want ask her to break up with him. I kept it to myself. But she is trying to sabotage me now. I had to block her from Facebook. She's 27, and she is acting an 18 year old.

$60k a year is good starting salary coming out of a 4 year college...granted...after a year or so you will get a significant raise if you have a degree.

of course it is. my dad supports a family of 7 with just slightly more than that, plus we live in a city with an very high cost of living. Maybe your friend was trying to be competitive with you.

Maybe that's what it is, because I've been google searching since she told me that and a lot of the jobs in my field are like that. But she is incredibly smart, she got better grades than me and everything and she's always right about everything. So that is why I want to check.
