Cheap Ways To Tweak Your Room

Like a fair share of other G@gers, I'm living the life of a studnet, meaning that my financial situation isn't exactly great. I live in my uni's dorms, and let me tell you, the person who designed the place clearly had no idea about what looks good. I put together some cheap ideas that can make your room or flat look way cozier :)

Wallpapers

They are not allowed everywhere, beacuse they would permanently alter the place and what not. If that's the case, you can just attach them with some double-sided duct tape, that stuff is not that hard to remove. I personally put wallpapers or wrapping paper on everything. My room had green walls, and I hate green, so I tried to cover up as much of it as possible. I use wrapping paper and leftover wallpaper to decorate old shoe boxes and boom, they suddenly look cute and presentable. Also, having the same pattern on a part of your wall and on some accessories makes the room look put-together, if you don't overdo it.

Carpets

My unit has a nasty-ass old black carpet. It has stains from people who lived here before me, and quite frankly I don't wanna know what they are. A small, simple fluffy carpet can easily cover some of that shit up. They are not even that expensive, if you get it at like IKEA.

Bedding

The bed takes up a lot of space, especially if you have a small room. I highly recommend investing in some nice bedsheets, they really make a difference. I personally like to convert my bed into a "sofa" type thing for the day. I have a bunch of pillows and fuzzy blankets, and if you take care arranging them nicely it makes the room look way more inviting. The same goes for curtains. You can get these at thriftshops, since the quality doesn't really matter that much. My room had green curtains when I first moved it, the designer must have had an emotional relationship with that color. I switched them out for beige ones and it made my room look exponentially better.

Photos & Art

Pictures of you and your friends instantly make the place feel more like home. I love to make collages, for example. You can choose the colors you'd like, put all your favorite photos and put it up over your desk. If you don't have the money to go to a photographer and have the pictures printed out professionally, you can just use a regular printer. If you tweak your collage with quotes, colors or whatever ish you're into, the difference in quality won't even be that visible.

Art looks great as well. Granted, original pieces are usually expensive as fuck, if they look good. What I like to do is frame my posters. It sounds really simple, but it can make a huge difference. And a frame doesn't cost more than $2.

Plants

Live plants just make the apartment look more alive. If you get a cactus or something, they don't even require that much care. And if it dies, it's not that big of a deal (unlike having a pet die). Also, having real plants in your room makes you seem really grown-up and mature.

(Obviously having a plant doesn't make you an adult, but it certainly leaves a good impression).

Candles

They're cheesy, but also cozy as hell. I really hate bright lights, especially in the evening. Together with the uglyass green walls, it gives off this hospital vibe. Instead of using the ceiling light, I got myself a couple lamps and some candles. The dim light they give off is way more pleasant than the flickering one full of bugs that the landlord was kind enough to give me. I like scented candles, but that's definitely not a must, I know it annoys the crap out of some people.
