(At least they are sad to me)

duh

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest moments

(Most are from season 4 and 5 because the first few seasons were more funny than sad)

Jimmy's compassionate release

Season 2 Episode 7

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest Moments

Jimmy was an old woman who had dementia. She believed she was 20 years old and that Lyndon B. Johnson was still president. She even broke her arm jumping off the auditorium stage because she thought she was jumping into a swimming pool.

She was given 'compassionate release'

where she was let out of prison early because of her condition. They dropped her off at the bus station instead of getting her the help she needs.

As she was taken into the van she was screaming "Roberta don't let them take me" at Piper (who she believed was her daughter)

Suzanne's (Crazy eyes) backstory

Season 4 Episode 11

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest Moments

Suzanne has some kind of mental illness. (delusions, emotional deregulation, poor boundaries, aggressive outbursts, difficulty understanding social cues, etc.)

Because of this, Suzanne lived with her sister who watched over her. One weekend her sister told Suzanne to make friends because she was leaving for the weekend.

Suzanne went to the park and started talking to a little boy (the son of a customer who comes to the store Suzanne works at)

She invited the boy to her house and they played video games. She was talking to him about him staying the whole weekend. He started getting nervous and wanted to leave, which made Suzanne angry because she didn't want her friend to run away.

He climbed out the window to leave by the fire escape. When Suzanne tried to grab him, he ended up falling to his death.

She just wanted a friend :(

She doesn't belong in prison, she needs to be in a mental institution to get help.

She enjoyed childish things, she liked toys and playing pretend. So she wanted a friend she had things in common with. She didn't know right from wrong. it's not her fault.

Lolly getting sent to Psych

Season 4 Episode 11

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest Moments

What happened:

Lolly had psychosis, she sees and hears things that aren't there and believes things that aren't true. She always believed there were people from the government planning to kill her.

Lolly and Alex Vause killed a prison guard (in self defense) and Lolly confessed to Mr. Healy. (the counselor) He sent her to the psychiatric ward because he believed this was another one of her delusions.

Why it's so sad:

Lolly was a very lovable character. Everyone liked her.

And she did not deserve to go to psych, or really to be in prison at all. She needed help. And in psych they don't give you help. They put you on drugs and chain you to a bed or lock you in a small cell.

What made it really sad is that she trusted Mr. Healy. She liked him, and was making progress with him. Then he goes and sends her to the worst place imaginable. She was screaming his name as she was getting carried away. Even Healy was crying himself as he watched.

Healy's suicide attempt

Season 4 Episode 11

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest Moments

Mr. Healy's job at the prison was to help the inmates. He tried his best but always failed, he was not very good at his job. Because of this he felt he had no purpose.

After sending Lolly to psych, the guard's body was found buried in the garden. He realized he was wrong about believing it was another part of Lolly's psychosis and he made the wrong decision.

He liked Lolly, he connected with her and tried his best to help her. But he felt he failed her.

Which led to him attempting suicide by walking into a lake.

He walked back out and later checked himself into a mental hospital.

I know you felt that you couldn't talk to me, which is ironic because it's my job to talk to people, you know? It's... it's something I've always taken pride in, but it's beginning to feel like... like...I don't know, Katya, maybe... maybe I'm not very good at my job. - Voicemail he left his wife before attempting

I know many people didn't like Mr. Healy, he was kind of a dick sometimes. But after hearing his backstory (which involved his mother who had a similar mental disorder as Lolly) and seeing him feel useless and wanting to kill himself, I felt bad for him.

Poussey's Death

(+ Bailey's and Brook's depression that followed)

Season 4 Episode 12

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest Moments

What Happened

All the inmates in the cafeteria stood on the tables in protest to the harsh treatments they go through. As the guards started pulling them down, Suzanne Warren started freaking out screaming "I did a bad thing!"

Officer Bailey, who is young and not properly trained (none of the guards were) grabbed Warren to bring her to psych. Poussey tried to get him off of her saying "just let me talk to her"

Bailey throws Poussey to the ground and plants his knee into her, with his hand on her neck trying to hold her down as he fights off Warren with his free hand.

He didn't realize all of his weight was on her and he ends up suffocating her..

Why It's Sad

Poussey was everyone's favorite character. Enough said. After her death every fan went "Oh they should of killed this person instead. or that person" and I agree, there is a character that I would love to see get killed off the show (*cough* Watson *cough*)

But I understand exactly why they chose to kill her off.

They chose an inmate the viewers really liked and then they chose a prison guard the viewers also really liked. Then they made them both get into a situation where you have to choose which side you're on. Which makes you open your eyes to both sides of the story.

Officer Piscatella's back story

Season 5 Episode 10

+ Death

Season 5 Episode 13

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest Moments

Listen, Piscatella was definitely the biggest asshole on the show. I think we all can agree with that. But his backstory was really really sad to me.

When he first started off as a guard, he worked at a men's prison. Him and an inmate, Driscoll, fell in love and had a secret relationship. It was secret because being a gay man in prison is...well...not fun?

The secret got out when an inmate caught them kissing. And that inmate sexually assaulted and beat Driscoll to death.

After that Piscatella took the prisoner who beat him and handcuffed him into a shower, turning on boiling hot water.

One guard turns to him and says that they should take him out because they're supposed to stop when he starts screaming, but Piscatella refuses. Letting him suffer from burns on 80% of his body, killing him.

That's some depressing shit.

The love of his life got murdered, so he murdered the killer in return.

His death:

Taystee held a gun up to his forehead while he was held hostage during the riot taking place. That's because Poussey's death and the riot was his fault.

As he had that gun to his head he realized what he did wrong. You can see it in his eyes that he wanted to change for the better. He said to her "Don't become like me" because she was about to kill him in revenge of Poussey's death just the way he killed the inmate who beat his boyfriend.

After setting him free, he left to exit the prison but an under trained member of the SWAT team accidentally shot him, killing him. (Just like how an under trained guard accidentally killed Poussey)

Season 5 ending scene

-All the inmates getting put onto different buses, getting separated.

-Flaritza (Flaca and Maritza) getting separated

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest Moments

-Everyone holding hands waiting for the SWAT team to come for them

Orange Is The New Black: Saddest Moments

And now we have a year to wait to see what happened to them..

They always end the seasons with damn cliffhangers.

If you're a fan of the show, let me know about any sad moments I missed.
