What are your thoughts? Are you alpha?
Who else is sick of hearing "alpha" male/female, "beta" male/female et al?
What are your thoughts? Are you alpha?
That stuff comes from the PUAs (pick up artists). I do believe that humans have a form of alpha and beta, but it's far from being so black and white.
I liked this site because it wasn't like all those PUA and "dating advice" sites. This site is helpful to people because it's NOT like that, it's for normal people. It's for the rest of us, who happen to be a majority.
Another PUA word I dislike more than alpha is "game". I haven't seen it used much at GaG, but I think I've seen girls use it more than guys. As in a guy has game or doesn't have game - with an implied judgement about the guy who doesn't have game.
The playboys and playgirls have their game. If that's their thing it's fine with me. They both know how the game is played and willingly play it.
The problem is when the game spills outside it's boundaries. The guys and girls playing that game are a minority. When it spills outside it's boundaries, it affects people who don't know the game. Some of the gamer qualities can be attractive to non-gamers. A girl gets pulled into something without understanding the rules. Then she ends up getting hurt.
When it was just the playboys and playgirls everything was fine. But it spilled out of it's boundaries and someone got hurt - through no fault of their own - not knowing the rules of that particular game doesn't make them a beta - not knowing how to play that game doesn't make them weak or inferior - not knowing the game sure as heck doesn't make it OK to play them because they "should have known better".
If people are going to play that game, fine. But they should be extra careful and make sure the other person knows when it's a game and when it's for real.
Amen brother.
where did it start?
when a couple of years ago, about the time Ryan Reynolds was explaining it to everyone.
Though he didn't have a specific word for it--alpha/beta. Now we do.
All "good" things come to an end... Hope this does.
When we go back to the era that women got married young to boring men their fathers approved of? It sure will.
Thing is, it's not just a Hollywood comedy film. It's the collective experiences of thousands of men being used to find patterns of female behavior and how to respond to them to achieve desired results.
It works. What's dumber--the men who do it, or so many women that require it?
Thing is, there's a ton of constants in men and women. Otherwise, the field of Psychology wouldn't exist.
So you simply don't like it because you don't like the idea of men getting taught how to be successful in dating, or you don't think that there's any special things men can do to be successful in dating, or you have no intelligent disagreement, or you think that men "should just get it" and you hate the idea of fakers who had to learn it going out and getting girlfriends?
All you need in order to be successful at dating is a lack of self-loathe, and empathetic person behavior comprehension.
I think some men need to lower their standard. Not that I have ever done it... but I much prefer dating the shy, mysterious and nervous types of girls.
You don't need to PUA training and all that crap to be successful LOL.
No, you don't need PUA crap. Just like you don't need an instructor to learn a skill. But it sure helps, ahah.
You just echoed what I said... gratz...
me, me, me!
And I'm also sick of all the cocky slangs "misc", "elite", "mirin", "jooooocy" (now this last one is especially dumb. Learn to spell!)
People obsessed by the use of these words seem immature to me. It's just like when people say "yolo". I even think "yolo" is better, because it doesn't put other people down. Whereas the words "alpha", "beta", and "elite" suggests that there are few select individuals that are better than the rest of the human race. What is it if now cocky and arrogant?
And what the fuck do "misc" and "jooooocy" mean?
I've never even heard those four before, wth? :D
"mirin" was a really strange one for me when i first saw people using it here. until someone mentioned this guy named Zyzz, i always that mirin was japanese rice wine :D
I don't hear it much outside of here except when coming across certain blogs or documentaries where they describe a wolf as "alpha." To me "alpha" is just used to describe someone who is extremely good at something. But the way some people throw it around is silly.
I should be considering myself a linguistic "alpha" since I know 8 languages...
Yeah, nowadays whoever has the largest biceps and pecks is the alpha...
It's ridiculous, I agree. The narcissists on here use it but sit on here all day, clearly it isn't working for them.
Followings created and maintained by spending so much time, no real life outside of it. Couldn't possibly.
NoblesseOblige *cough cough* ...
you mentioned nobl*cough*cough...agree.
So long as his posse of female "admirers" lick him off... No.
i think it's not appropriate for a 30 years old "ALPHA"
to use this kind of pic.it's degrading.

Me. It's not going to end anytime soon. It's for guys what "creepy" is for girls. Just simple-minded people buying into groupthink and then trying to spread their dogma like a zealot. All they need is the "alpha god" and the "creepy goddess" to complete their faith.
Alpha is a label some overly self-absorbed people give themselves in order to have an excuse to be an asshole. Agree with Prof_Don that it's an acquired behavioral pattern.
Yes, I'm very capable of behaving like an asshole, but mostly I choose not to.
Not really, come to think of it I don't really hear it that much.
Its a term just used to describe the pecking order within a group, doesn't matter if its humans or animals.
Im quite confident and outgoing but I don't love or crave attention so I wouldn't consider myself an alpha of a group.
I've come across it, on this site and in real life. Alpha's are notoriously the thug, narcissistic types pumped on steroids.
meeeh, id say the alpha is purely the one who holds the most visible power in a group.
You just see it as stereotypically being some muscle bound idiot because the groups that are most likely to use the word "alpha" and "beta" are American frats, generally filled with football players who are a bit dense upstairs.
But in other groups, the 'alpha' can be the richest, the most popular, the most attractive or the most intelligent.
I hate the word not the person per se... If someone is the most intelligent, let him be known as the most intelligent, not an "alpha" which reeks of "douchebagness"
Again, you only associate the term 'alpha' because of the stereotypical image of an American frat boy using it.
I personally still see no issue with the word.
It's used in the UK (where I'm from) too.
You might not, but I do.
Oh, I've personally never really heard it being used in the uk apart from when someone is taking the piss.
Suppose it purely depends on who you come into contact with.
Its really stupid. PUA's have turned dating and meeting women in Complicated Science. When its really not.
And anyone who has to refer to themselves as an alpha clearly isn't.
This :)
i am sick of it too but they will never go away unfortunatly
A bit like YOLO and swag right?
We're not monkeys. I also agree. That alpha, beta stuff is retarded.
People are different and better than one another in one aspect or another. Bu those too lazy to bother to describe what the hell they are talking about, use these retarded adjectives.
It's completely childish, the way some guys on here use it. I won't say any names, but I think we all know what users definitely overdo the whole alpha-talk...
Eh, it's whatever. I rarely hear people using it outside GaG.
Everyone at my Uni in the UK uses it. I've heard a 14 year use it too.
Other than here I hear it most when associating with monkeys or gorillas
Hehehe ;)
That alpha / beta destination thing is so overblown.
It's more about behavioral patterns (which anyone can adopt) more than pre-determined genetics.
Am sick of it too. We're not a wolf pack. Seriously people.
And I don't want an "alpha" (despite what he might think) if he describes other dudes as "beta." Get over yourself.
Oh god. Finally >> This ain't teen wolf. It was started up and was suppose to be fun, stop pushing it
And re: the other part, I honestly don't really care. I am who I am, I kind of gave up trying to "fit in" a long time ago. But I have friends and stuff and am apparently popular in my own way thank God.
Guess that (ironically) makes me an alpha of sorts...I don't know actually, don't often hear it applied to women.
*I am who and what I am - and I'm happy with that for the most part (we all can improve).
Always have, always will be. Such an overrated trend. Only insecure people hide behind those types of labels, because they want to feel as if they actually have an identity.
Couldn't agree more.
I wouldn't call it overrated though, more over used :/
Was about to say :) yeah you're right it's both.
I'm sure it's more prominent in the US, as it's there where it started.
Well if people stopped asking and talking about it, it would end lol. Already answered else where but I think i'm primarily beta but alpha second depending on the environment.
I don't care who else said it, this is my question, not there's. It's so over used on this website anyway.
Well if you look at your style of writing it appeared as though you made a complaint 'I'm sick and tired of hearing this crap. Where did it all start? And will it end?'...then you contradicted yourself by going ahead and asking the same question as well.
Regardless I answered again (perhaps even for your sake) so appreciate.
Urgh for crying out loud... Now you're just being pedantic.
Right?
We're not fucking pack animals for crying out loud.
I know how you feel! It's really just the difference between leaders and followers, strong presences and meek presences.
People should just be themselves.
Yeah I always get this sense of fake with "alphas"
doesn't seem like a very fair view
I don't think it's fair on "alphas" to label some people "betas".
...alrighty then?
I dont think it will ever end because some people are really into these type os stuff. and if I did have to identify myself, I'd say im far from being 'alpha'
According to some I'm "Omega" ... A line wolf?
Lone*
It means you don't follow anyone and you don't have anyone following you. You're essentially yourself.
I'm too alpha for that shit.
Hahahaha :)
Yeah its so annoying and such bs. One male user comments on my questions with alpha talk and beta bux.
When i first read the words "Alpha Male" i thought it was a gay lingo.lol.
Haha :P
Me me me me. I'm tired of it.. people are so hung up on labels. Just act normal
I think this goes hand in hand with homosexuality. Who cares if you're alpha? If it feels good for you then great! But don't go slam the shy nervous folk for being "beta"
Yeah I agree and also don't Jam it down our throats that they're alpha
Whenever someone calls himself alpha, I just can't take him seriously, so I call him zeta.
Lol.. alpha zeta Jones. . They say I'm alpha alpha alpha like they say it enough we'll believe it lol
