Why do police officers have mustaches?

Is there like a secret handbook somewhere that says, "to be an officer you must complete the academy and have a mustache."

Yes, there is an unwritten man code that stipulates a man cannot be an officer without a 'stache.

They have it, because ladies love mustache rides and other men find it intimidating

My boyfriend is a cop; he and his co-workers only have mustaches during "No Shave November." They're actually more likely to be shot if they have a mustache. So, yeah, I just poked a hole in your theory. A lot of cops do not have mustaches.

Goatees, on the other hand, are totally acceptable.

Hm...interesting, I was hoping someone cop related would post. However, my theory still stands in the sense that cops still have to grow a mustache at least once a year (of which I do partake in). But expand your statement of being more likely to be shot if one had a Stache..

That's actually something my boyfriend was told in the academy. Cops are statistically more likely to be shot if they have mustaches. Something about them looking less authoritative.

And they don't *have* to grow a mustache once a year. I think very few of them do. People don't really take them seriously when they look like '70s p*rn stars lol.

Hm...interesting, i'm guessing that you either live on the east coast or in the south? One of the reasons why I posted this question was because from my experience on the West coast (California doesn't count) a majority of cops have a mustache/goatee than those without any facial hair. I found that interesting and decided to test the waters but I definitely learned something new today!

My boyfriend is with the NYPD, which has some strict rules when it comes to appearance. And now I'm looking at a thread about department facial hair policies on a police forum lol. I never thought about this before!

Ha ha ha, yes on the Northwest Coast of America we apparently still live in the '70's and a majority of cops that I've run into sport the glorious mustache
