Why are a lot of vegans so self-righteous?

Question

Obviously not all are like this, but some are...
Like I was talking to someone I know who has recently became a vegan and I was telling her that I respect vegans but I personally couldn't do it.
This was her reply:
"I'm fine with that. Not my life, just like mine isn't yours. Just educate yourself, know the effects that your having on yourself and others, and understand that you're asking someone to give up their life just so you can have heart disease, cancer and momentary pleasure. That is all."
I was like What? I didn't fight with her and just ignored her...but What the hell?
ANYONE can get heart disease and cancer no matter what they eat, to say otherwise is ignorant.

lol one of those questions that I wish were never asked. It's pretty simple but people's opinions and perception complicates it :)

Yes I've known a lot of vegans who behave the way you describe though not all of them. My family is basically vegan while I eat anything that moves :D

I don't have anything against vegans, everyone like me is free to follow what they want. My debate with a lot of those who consider it being righteous to be vegan is simply that what makes vegans righteous against others? Just cause plants don't bleed red or they can't move or they don't groan / scream in pain when they are cut, does it make it legit to grow them just to cut them down?

If nature intended humans to be vegan then we'd not be omnivorous. The only reason why thinkers started talking vegan eons ago was otherwise man won't be inclined to work i.e. farm etc he'd just go on depleting nature's reserves before turning on self i.e. cannibalism & that is the only reason I see / perceive as the primary reason for 'veganism'

Also it depends on the climatic conditions as to what diet affects one on what terms :)

You are right about that and she is part correct as well. It is bothersome how uptight vegans get but some are cool. I think the younger the vegan is the more opinionated and outspoken they are because of their passion for it. I remember on of the first girls I fell in love with became a vegan when we were together. We went shopping together and when we got to the meat section she was like "REALLY?" Then she quickly went to the section where the chiken hearts were and feet too and was picking them up and saying "Mmmm - eat me! eat me!" It was a crazy time but now she is a reserved vegan and respects people's choices either way. She still will take the time to educate people that ask her about it but never forces her opinion on people anymore. I hope this helps. Cheers :D

I'm a vegan but it's my policy to never impose my beliefs on other people - just like someone who is highly religious should respect the fact that some people aren't and not condemn them for not thinking as they do (or vice versa).

In fact, I don't usually tell people I'm vegan unless they ask.
If people ask me if I'm vegan, or why I'm vegan, I'll explain. Usually people turn out to be very interested in knowing more about it since they don't know any vegans and it's generally a very positive experience. My response to what you said would have been "It's not for everyone", and that's the truth. I won't try to force my views on anyone else, and I don't delude myself into thinking I'm above anyone because I don't eat animals. Unfortunately, not all of us think this way :(

I've worked with a vegan who was like that. Once we were on shift, she went through the fridge and pulled out MY sandwich and demanded to know whose it was, I said it was mine, she then said, "WHY IS IT RED? WHY IS THE CRUST RED?"
I replied, "It's not red, it's orange because the baked beans have spilled over."
She laughed nervously and put it back.

I think the vegans who are self-righteous would be that way regardless, it just so happened they picked veganism, if it hadn't been that it would be something else e.g. religion, politics, breeding, etc.

I'm vegeterian in progress to go vegan and If someone told me that I'd just say "If you don't want you don't have to". Vegan people cares a lot about health and how animals are mistreated to feed humans, so sometimes they show it with long explanations that nobody matters.

You are right i agree, it's something mental in their head has to be
I'm required to eat certain amount of all foods, including meats, carbs
I'm diabetic and got low blood sugar without certain foods doctor told me
i would be running into more health problems , with low blood sugars all the time
yes I'm overweight no doubt but i tried killing myself for years to lose weight
I'm not lying, i would eat enough food that you would feed a baby it was
horrible , no way I'm going down that road again

This isn't only vegans, anyone who thinks they are doing something good gives them a sense of self righteousness, whether it does or not.

No do i get that from what she said, she's just emotional about it and hopes you understand the implications of your diet.

Thats oversimplifying things. Yes anyone can, but a person who eat healthy is MUCH less likely. A person eating junk food is much more likely to get disease, there's no doupt about that.
