Lol they ain't doing it to insult you, it's to guard their backs and make sure they don't risk losing their job over something stupid like counterfeit money. It's not that they think you made it and are passing it on as fake but most people really can't tell if it's fake or real, even the cashiers a lot of times can't cause they rely on those stupid pens that only tell you if the paper is legit and not if the bill is real or not (on old paper it won't even work). If you're embarrassed then tough luck, odds are they won't care if you hold the bill up in the air and check so go right ahead. The only thing you'll accomplish by doing that is pissing off the dude behind you cause you're making him wait longer.
If you want the holding up to the light to be stopped then go retrain every cashier in the stores you go to, and retrain their bosses and retrain the owners of the store or regional managers of the store in how to properly assess whether the cash is real or fake without having to hold every bill up to the light. If you're not willing to do that then they'll keep doing it to guard their backs.
Since most people can't tell and don't bother to check if the cash they have is real or fake, they may have gotten fooled by someone who was fooled by some counterfeiter. Why would the cashier risk the job or the store take a loss just because you don't want them to check the bill? What if you were given a fake bill and didn't know it? The store doesn't want to take that fake bill and take a loss so they'll make the cashier check. Go buy the business and tell the employees not to check your money cause you're the boss lol

No it doesn't bother me at all. In fact I don't blame stores for doing it. There are a number of stores here in Canada that will scrutinize $5 bills. That's the smallest bill we have.
Counterfeiters aren't stupid. It's more difficult to use large bills that are legal. So they're counterfeiting 5, 10, 20 dollar bills. They are smaller but a lot easier to pass.
As far as the "us clean cut hard working honest guys" that made me laugh. What does that have to do with the price of oranges in China?
I guess you have never been a cashier before... one time someone handed me a fake 20 dollar bill and no its not insulting,
its insulting when a customer would do what you say you would do...
its insulting when customers scream at cashiers like everything is their fault or because their lettuce in not ringing up for a dollar...
its insulting when a customer throws food at you because they felt like it...
its insulting when customers say very loudly in front of whole other customers that a cashier is not capable of thinking just doing what she is expected to do...
its insulting when a customer tells a cashier you should have stayed in school (meanwhile we are in school - we are just trying to make a little bit enough just for the train)...
its also insulting when customers like you feel embarrassed if we hold up a 50 dollar bill into believing its fake meanwhile we all have to do what our crappy managers tell us to do - that is, raise the damn money in the air and inspect the 20, 50, or 100 dollar bill like its an alien...
So, is it insulting that a cashier does that - no, not really... this used to be my damn job...
No, it's a part of their job.
When I was a cashier (many years ago), cashiers would be responsible if they got a counterfeit bill
and their job would be on the line. If this happened on more than one occasion the cashier would be let go.
It's the cashiers responsibility to make sure they are getting real money.
They always told us if its over twenty dollars either call the manager, hold it up to the light, or mark it with a special marker.
Different companies have different policies on how they want you to handle larger bills.
I see a cashier as someone just doing what they are told by those above them.
There is no need to be offended.
Cashiers take a lot of shit, the least they need is someone adding to it.
Kind of insulted, so I said to them "I just made it" and laugh lol. Not only $50s,20s and $100s.

It's called doing our job.
If I got a counterfeit bill, it was on me to replace it with real money, or get written up.
and, I've had customers check the money I gave as change.
It never bothered me, but the others in line usually gave them an earful and made them feel stupid. You could be a little 5 year old girl or a 99 year old man, and i'd still check if it's real because if its not, then i'd get into some deep-ass trouble with my boss. It's required for me to check whether it's real or not. If it happens to be not real, then I just handed $50 or $100 worth of shit to some honest-looking customer. And guess who pays for that $50-$100 worth of shit? Me. So I check it, and you shouldn't be insulted. It's nothing personal. I am not insulting you. You could've been handed fake money and you're unaware of it. So sit down and calm the fuck up.
You shouldn't get embarrassed. It's their job. If some knuckle head goes in there with fake money and they take it a lot of companies would take it out of their commission/paycheck or fire them. If me keeping my job and paying my bills means holding up a large bill for 5-7 seconds then the last thing I'm going to worry about is your feelings. Plus it's such a common practice now you shouldn't even give it any attention.
I feel insulted, but at the same time I know they are only doing their job by checking. I feel more insulted if I am in a line with others behind me and they go through the check, you get the feeling everyone is looking at you and thinking you must be a crook or something.
i don't feel insulted at all, i view it as someone doing their job. they do this to me even after they see me pull the $20 in question out of the atm machine in their store. so why would i be insulted by this? it's not personal obviously.
Not at all. That is often the store's policy- it's a rule.
Think of it this way it could be their job and people who counterfeit money have no stereotype. i work In a casino and I deal with lots of money everyday. I check everything I get with a uv light. Why because I have a 4 year old to support and have bills. It's my ass if I screw up. And I don't care if it were some rich person who made millions or a homeless person my 4 year old and making sure I can provide for him and give him everything he needs is far more important!
*Raise it up in the air, like ya just dont care*
Well, it's what they need to do. So, I do not get offended. Doesn't matter if your a clean cut, hardworking, nice guy... still need to check. If they are doing it you, then most likely they will do it all the others behind you in line, so no need to be embarrased.Nah i dont get insulted... I tell the checkout person... careful the ink is still wet I made that batch this morning :P
They are just doing their job if someone gave them counterfeit money then they would get in trouble for not checking it. I just got a money order for $300 I had all most were 20's and he checked them all in front a long ass line was I insulted no? Annoyed? yes but I know he has to do it or he could risk losing the job if something would slip through the cracks. If you do it back when they give you change, then you will make yourself look stupid.
No man, they always follow that rule. Don't get offended over it.
Nobody's trying to make you feel badly there, it's just them doing their jobs.
I really don't see why this needs to be taken personally or made into a big deal.I work in a casino and see many fake bills. I also run through thousands of dollars a day. If a shady character comes up, yes I'm going to look at it. No I didn't read what you wrote because there are only five periods and it is difficult to read.
Haha no that never comes to mind.. The first thing i think is "i swear to of if that (teller/(person)" gave me a fake bill..!"
No not at all, sadly its needed now a days...
I usually just joke around with them saying like "I made it fresh this morning so it should be good". Just like obvious jokes to make them smile :)I do actually. I feel very weird, as if i did something wrong. But its their job.
LMFAO, you're hilarious. When they hand out the cash, I'll hold it up on the air and stare hard at it just for laugh.
To answer your question, I don't care but it does make you question. To me is "hurry the fuck up, I'm trying to go somewhere"nope don't feel insulted... they're just doing their job
and yes i did read all thatNo because they usually have a dumb look on their face when they found out its real lol!
Nope, why would I? If it insults you, you take things personally. Money is in circulation, it woldnt mean i did anything wrong. They rarely even check my 50s, and even 100s dont always get checked.
