Why do U. S. Marines train martial arts?

Whats the point of learning hand to hand combat when the enemy is shooting at you with guns?

  • Although the situations would be rare in modern combat, there are situations in close combat --- say in an urban environment --- where martial arts training would be useful and maybe life-saving. It's not that hard to imagine a scenario, where maybe a soldier's weapon has jammed or he has run out of ammo, and knowing martial arts might give that soldier a chance against opposing fighters who might only have say a knife. The Marines are all about being ready for those kinds of situations, and I'm glad they are.

  • All military personnel that are xpected to be fighting close quarters, get martial arts training.. these would be the handful of personnel that are deployed among possibly thousands of millions of others, things require to be done quietly in those situations... a gun isn't much good if it's jammed or out of ammo with multiple assailants..
Besides, martial arts ( and there are far better terms for this) can give you a much quieter method of dealing with the enemy,
Muzzle flash at night is a dead give away of your position...

Aside from military purposes, it will reinforce attributes, like honor, respect, self control and beng able to assess and control situations that may easily get out of hand...
Everyone thinks martial arts is about killing people or kicking their face in.. thats actually only a fraction of it, and that's last resort stuff.. There are much better and simpler ways to control a situation

    Been there...

  • im a corporal in the British army and have done multiple tours of afghan and Iraq. we train in CQB because infantry personnel still get up close and personal to the enemy when clearing compounds etc. combat is not limited to fire fights, and so we still need to be trained in hand to hand to combat.

I've had to fix bayonets multiple times and it is the most exciting/scary thing imaginable.

  • CQB.

Close quarters combat. Say if a hostile attacks you with a knife you'll be able to disarm him and kill him. Something you probably wouldn't be able to do without training.

  • Sometimes the enemy is important for intel. Soo you can't kill him, you must capture him. And in those scenerios they can try to beat you and you can't kill them, soo you use martial arts to imobilize them.
