I was wondering if that was their obligation. I know personally when my parents respect me it makes me work harder. I don't know whats your thoughts?

Yes. Just because the parent has authority over the child, doesn't mean that they should abuse it by treating the child in a disdainful way.

Yes they should respect them. That doesn't mean they should treat them as equals though. They should maintain an authority role.
Well no one is forced to respect anyone. It's good if they do but no they aren't obligated
