  • There's a lot of helping professions out there, personally, I like social work the best which is why I'm currently getting my degree in that field. It's such a broad field with a large variety of career options. Typically, it doesn't pay a lot unless someone has their masters' degree and has been in the field for a long time, however, it can be extremely rewarding and social workers definitely impact a lot of people.

    Things social workers can do:
    -Adoption
    -Case Management
    -Child Protection
    -Child Welfare
    -Mental Health
    -Crisis Intervention
    -Disaster Relief
    -Domestic Violence
    -Foster Care
    -Gerontology
    -Medical Social Work
    -Homelessness
    -Global Social Work
    -Policy
    -Advocacy
    -Research
    -School-based Social Work
    -Substance Abuse
    -Addiction
    -Community Planning
    -etc.

    • i prefer helping people in operational environments than long term case work.

    • Not everything in social work is long term. It's a very diverse career field as I mentioned.

  • Well, you will also have to support yourself, I would say a psych degree and certification as an LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor) or an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and a role in an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Since companies have money, these positions typically pay much better than public service.

    • Depends which industry though.

    • customer service is not an altruistic position where you're helping people in need. most of the time you're helping idiots deal with things they're too stupid to figure out on their own.

      trust me I've done it.

  • None of those. You can't help people if you're too poor to feed yourself.

    • You and I have vastly different views on adequate compensation.
