  • Most body panels are steel, but bumpers and grills are most often plastic in modern cars. A few cars, such as Saturns, used plastic body panels as well, including doors and fenders. Toyota is also using plastic for truck beds on newer Tacomas.

Older cars, such as older Corvettes, used fiber glass, because plastics of the day weren't strong enough, didn't hold up as well, and weren't as easy to deal with, but modern plastics are lighter, stronger, and cheaper, and fiberglass has fallen out of use.

    • There are a few rare exceptions too. The Acura NSX uses mostly aluminum body panels (expensive) to save weight, and the DeLorean DMC-12 (the Back To The Future car) used stainless steel for the body panels. A few very expensive super-cars have used carbon fiber body panels.

  • You mean the body panels?
These days , most of them are made of fiber glass but the older ones tend to be made of steel , the good ones even have boron infused into them to make a sort of tough boron steel body... good stuff the old ones.

    • yeah I think so

    • You're talking about basically re-sculpting an entire body panel and making a custom car here.
You'll need someone like Chip Foose lol

  • Most modern road cars have fibreglass panels but older ones were steel or aluminium. Performance cars tend to be made of aluminium or carbon fibre.
If you want to be super technical, it's paint, and even more technical, it's clear coat :P
