Why are they doing what they're doing? How did they come about?

ISIS (also known as the Islamic State) stands for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. It grew out of al Qaeda in Iraq, but split off from al Qaeda. ISIS has declared a caliphate, claiming jurisdiction over all Muslims and is waging war against the infidels (non-Muslims and Muslims who aren't down with ISIS) to expand their rule. They are trying to recreate the more pure form of Islam that existed during the time of Muhammad and the first few generations after his death. That's when the new faith was being spread by holy war (jihad) and unbelievers (infidels) were given the choice to either convert to the new faith, die, or sometimes be allowed to live if they paid tribute to Muhammad and his successors. ISIS (like its medieval forbears) are fond of knives and swords and beheading people. They also like to bury people alive, burn them alive, drown people in cages, and throw homosexuals off the roofs of tall buildings. They are truly the lowest form of humanity (if you can call them that) on earth. Their goal is to bring all the world under submission to the caliphate. (One of the meanings of "Islam" is "submission.")2
