Anyone good at math?

I need to reduce this to lowest form 3 1/8 + 11/4
the answer is 4 3/8. I'm kind of getting confused of how to get to that answer.

  • That is not the correct answer.

    3 1/8 = 25/8 ( due to 3x8 + 1 = 25/8)

    25/8 + 11/4 = (find the common denominator which is 8) = 25/8 + 2 (11/4)

    25/8 + 22/8 = 47/8

    47/8 = 5 7/8

  • Add the 3 and the 1. That's how you get the four. 1/4 is just two 1/8s. Add the 1/8 from the other side and you get 3/8

  • Make a common denominator (the bottom term in the fraction) by doubling 11/4 to 22/8 then add the numerators (the top number) to get 23/8. Then see how many times 8 goes into 23, the answer is 2 with a remainder of 7 or 2 7/8. Add the 3 from 3 1/8 and the answer is not 4 3/8 it is 5 7/8 . Which might explain why you couldn't get there.

    • Hmm yeah I see thanks, they gave me the wrong answer then. And that answer u just gave me is not even on one of the answers

  • I'm terrible at math. I just got really good at Excel though; I swear it's the only reason I passed college math classes.
