I beleive in them because 90% of the oceans haven't been discovered yet and legends have to come from somewhere.
This is making me want to live in the sea and it's sad that it's not possible. It would be so much fun to be swimming in the middle of nowhere trying to find mermaids. With the exception that there are no harmful creatures lurking around. (sharks, ect)

Ever hear of the "burden of evidence"? There has to be some kind of evidence for mermaids to even be considered by scientists. If they actually existed we would have discovered their skeletons at some point.
The reason scientists believe in some sea creatures they haven't seen yet is because there is physical evidence to support it. Like the colossal squid: scientists had never seen one but they believed it existed because they had skeletons and dead squids all over the place.
No physical mermaid evidence has ever been found. If you find some I'll believe you, but there hasn't been any evidence of mermaids, anywhere.1

So you believe that half human half fish people swim around under the water, but only because most of the cavernous area of the ocean are unknown to us.
Yeah the legends came from somewhere... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mermaid
If they were in any way real, we would have found evidence of them by now, especially if they were capable of reaching the surface where people could see them.
