Why some people call other people here “sir”?

I dunno…. sounds weird in an online community…. like “thanks for yer input sir”

Huh?

  • It's just for fun when I say it, like 'bite your tongue sir!' Or 'take that back sir!'. However, just because you're online doesn't mean you should throw respect out the window. If that's how a person is used to talking in the real world, why should they change it here?

  • It is simply showing respect. It may be for the person's position (more so on the outside, for police, senators, etc.), their age, the respect they are showing others.

Other terms also apply. Uncle and aunt are terms of respect for elders that you will often hear in the Hawaiian community.

And of course it can be disrespectful when used as sarcasm.
