Is you open a bag of candies and eat some but don't pay it is that still stealing?

Let's say you want to try a couple Skittles but not all of them just for the heck of it. Then you leave the bag with the remaining candies on the corner and walk away.

Updates:
Or a bag of lolliopops where you only try out one but leave the whole bag on the corner.

  • Yes, it's stealing. The person opened a closed package/product and ate some of it without paying. They also contaminated that opened package and cannot resell it.

  • Yep. This is a blatantly obvious case of stealing. Once you open it then they cannot sell it anymore, so it cost the store the same amount whether you left the bag or not. It's garbage to them.

However, to be 100% clear, even in the cases where the can still sell the stuff anyway, like eating one lolliopop out of a bulk bin, it's still stealing. Stealing is defined at "taking another person's property without permission or legal right and without intending to return it." Taking even one lolliopop is by definition stealing.

  • you took something out of the bag without paying for it, yep stealing.

you took something out of the bag and returned it NOT in its original factory conditions, tampering with merchandise/goods.

  • Yes, that's stealing. The package is now not fit for sale because you've crammed your unwashed hands into it.

    • Wow you're comparing a candy bag with a person? Anyways, I don't have a boyfriend yet.

    • Don't treat others the way you don't like to be treated. It is not for the sake of fairness but it is for the sake of the inner clothing you choose to wear.

  • This is why the started putting cameras in grocery stores. It's kinda stupid

  • Are you serious? Of course it's stealing. The store will never be able to sell an open bag of candy just as if you took the whole bag. Are you a moron?

    Why would you think otherwise?

    • Because I'm not taking the bag and looking outside of the store with it.

    • But the idea is to get what's inside of the bag, not the bag itself.

  • yeah that's stealing. you still took some of the product and didn't pay

    • Though they more than likely produce thousands (or more) of those candies. It never runs out so very unlikely they'll take a big notice of one single half-empty bag.

    • It's not about the quantity. It's about being inconsiderate and disrespectful towards other people. Why would you open a bag of candy, eat some and then leave it? What if we all did that? It's gross.
