  • You've got languages families, for example the Roman languages, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Romanian, Italian, Catalan, etc. and Germanic languages, Dutch, German, English, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian etc. Or the Slavic languages, Polish, Czech, Slovakian, Serbian, Russian, Ukrainian etc. And a whole lot more of course. That doesn't mean however that the language which are in the same family are much like each other, for example Icelandic and Dutch, no clue, what it's about. But German and Dutch resemble each other much more, like Spanish and Catalan.

  • Well English is a Germanic language, so they English and German are alike in a lot of ways. They have many similar sounding words.

    Hello -> Hallo
    Mother -> Mutter
    Father -> Vater
    Night -> Nacht
    Sun -> Sonne
    Then -> Denn
    Water -> Wasser
    New -> Neu
    Old -> Alt

    The list goes on, haha.

  • Polish/Russian/Slovenian/Ukrainian/Slovak.
    I think Dutch sounds reminiscent of German as well.
