  • Let "x" be Evie's age

    (36+x)+3=5(x+3)

    Solve for x.

  • Evie is 6, her father is 42. In 3 years, Evie will be 9, and her father will be 45.

    • I'll also give you my working, though there may be a simpler way.

      Let Evie's age = E, and her father's age = F.

      F + 3 = 5 (E + 3)
      Solve for F
      F + 3 = 5E + 15
      F = 5E + 12

      E = F - 36
      Now sub in for F
      E = 5E + 12 - 36
      -4E = 12 - 35
      -4E = -24
      Reverse the signs
      4E = 24
      E = 6

      Sub your value for E into the word problem. If Evie is 6, in 3 years she will be 9. 9 x 5 is 45, which is 3 more than 42. 42 is 36 more than 6, which is Evie's original age.

  • Let E equal Evie's current age.

    E + 36 + 3 = 5E
    39 = 4E
    E = 9.75 or 9 years 9 months old
