  • Status in modern society is more from wealth and celebrity than political power (except at the highest level).

    One of the things which distinguished Western society and led to it's extraordinary energy was that anyone could increase their social status through wealth. In most societies these energies were damped because accumulating wealth only made you a target for people with political power to take it from you. This is the reason for a lot of the poverty in dictatorial regimes to this day. People are not secure in their property.

    • Makes sense... The original leaders were military leaders... Dating back to the earliest civilizations... But now there is a "civil" law that exists under the protection of the military...

      Kind of weird that George Clooney, Justin Bieber, and Miley Cyrus have "status"...
