I think this link will be of great help to you.. I do hope so anyway.
For what it's worth, I never measure the water when cooking pasta... Dunno if it's a bad thing or not, but I've never had spachetti or any other pasta turn out bad because I didn't measure. Fill a pot with water, add some salt, bring it to a boil and add the pasta... follow the cooking directions on the box, drain, add sauce (NOT in the strainer, which I've seen done...), and enjoy!
(Don't forget the Parmesan cheese!)
I don't know but apparently the more water you use the better, when I do pasta a get a massive pot of salted water boiling and chuck in a bit of olive oil to help stop the pasta sticking then it's in with the pasta.
