Why do people become journalists if it doesn't pay well?

I've always wondered.

  • Pays better than being an aspiring novelist.

Writers write. They often write about writing. So there are lots of books, articles, movies etc which glorify being a journalist. Journalists can be important but i think they market the job pretty well given the reality.

I think a lot of aspiring journalists dont' realize how dismal the job prospects are, and how much worse they are getting every year.

I think universities create journalism programs, and they -seem- a lot more career oriented then say English literature.
